Getting Out and About – A Day of New Adventures!
A group of Tapawera women proved that you're never too old for a new adventure when they headed to Nelson to celebrate Age Concern's 50th Jubilee and International Day of Older Persons on 1 October.
The day began with a carpool to Wakefield, where the group joined Jackie from Age Concern for a bus trip into Nelson. With free public transport available to SuperGold Card holders between 9am and 3pm, it was a great opportunity to leave the driving to someone else, enjoy the scenery and share plenty of laughs along the way.
After arriving in Nelson, the group took advantage of a free shuttle service organised by Age Concern to Founders Heritage Park. But first, there was time for an unexpected discovery!
A wander through the beautiful Miyazu Japanese Gardens was a highlight of the day. For many, it was their first visit to this peaceful spot, where cherry blossoms were beginning to bloom and the wisteria arbour was coming into flower. Everyone agreed it would be a wonderful place to return to for a picnic.
Next stop was Founders Heritage Park, where the group enjoyed refreshments, food, entertainment and a chance to explore. Surprisingly, three of the six women, all long-term locals, had never visited before!
With free entry for Nelson Tasman residents, the group reflected on how many wonderful attractions and experiences are right on our doorstep, just waiting to be discovered.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable and affordable day out, with everyone keen to plan more adventures beyond Tapawera.
The outing was also a lovely reminder of just how important it is to stay connected. With winter illnesses having taken their toll on many in our community, getting out, trying something new, sharing a laugh and strengthening friendships can make a real difference to our wellbeing.
And as the group jokingly pointed out, perhaps it's time for a few more of the fellas to join in too!
Come Along and Get Connected!
Our Sit and Be Fit sessions continue every Friday at 10am at St Peter's Church in Tapawera. It's a great opportunity to enjoy some gentle exercise, catch up with friends and perhaps help dream up the next adventure.
New faces are always welcome!
