Cake, Icing & a Night Off Bedtime Duty

Our latest Rural Mums night was a pretty sweet one… literally!

We headed along to Memorial Hall for a night with Cake & Crumble to learn a bit more about cake decorating, and it was such a good time.

We started with a three-layer cake, choosing between chocolate and vanilla for each layer. There were plenty of different combinations around the room… I went chocolate, vanilla, then chocolate… it was a hard choice.

From there, we added a crumb coat of icing before moving on to the top layer and choosing our base colour. Mine was yellow, while Lizie and Jane went for an ombré effect with their base icing, which looked amazing.

Then came the really fun part, where we saw everyone's creativity shine.

We were shown a range of different piping techniques and given a beautiful selection of pastel icing colours to play with. Some cakes ended up simple and elegant, others went a little more decorative, and Madeline went completely all-in using every piping tip available to create the most extravagant, wonderfully frilly cake of the night. Shay went really unique with a mermaid, under-the-sea theme, thinking outside the box to use different piping techniques.

There was a lot of laughing, a serious amount of icing, and an equally serious amount of edible glitter and sprinkles.

Of course, we can’t go without giving a huge shoutout to Abby for organising this event and for her excellent platter-making skills. Abby always organises a great Rural Mums get-together and, perhaps most importantly, allows us to enjoy an evening out where we didn’t have to deal with getting the kids to bed.

A big thank you to Cake & Crumble for coming to Tapawera, supplying delicious cakes and icing, and guiding us through the night. We had such a great time, and everyone went home with a cake that looked completely different and far more impressive than most of us probably expected when we signed up.
