Tapawera Community Hub
A community-led conversation about future shared spaces in Tapawera.
What this page is about
This page shares information about the proposed Community Hub, where things are currently at, and how people can be part of the conversation.
There is a range of views across our community. This space is here to help everyone stay informed, ask questions, and be involved in what comes next.
What is a Community Hub?
A community hub is a shared space designed to support a range of activities, services, and connections in one place.
This could include things like community programmes, visiting services, meeting spaces, and support during emergencies.
What that looks like in Tapawera is still part of the conversation.
Why is this conversation happening?
Over time, it has become clearer that some of the spaces currently available in Tapawera are limited in what they can support.
This includes things like:
accessibility
safety and compliance
the ability to run multiple activities at once
having suitable spaces for visiting services
We’ve also seen, through things like the closure of the old community centre and, more recently, during flood response, how important it is to have spaces that can support connection, coordination, and practical support when needed.
This conversation explores what the future of shared community space could look like.
What we’ve heard so far
Through previous conversations and engagement, a few common themes have come through.
People have spoken about:
The importance of having places to connect
the need for practical, usable spaces
concerns around cost, location, and long-term sustainability
wanting to be part of shaping any future solution
All of these perspectives are important and part of the ongoing conversation.

What a hub could support
A future shared space could support a range of uses, depending on what the community needs.
This may include:
Community activities (e.g. seniors programmes, youth activities, parent groups)
Visiting services (e.g. health, education, support services)
Local groups and meetings
Events and workshops
Emergency response and coordination
These are examples only, and part of the reason for consultation is to better understand what matters most to people.
Questions and considerations
There are still a number of things being worked through, including:
How a space would be funded
Where it could be located
How would it be used day to day
How would it be maintained over time
These are all valid questions, and ones that will continue to be explored as part of the process.

The next stage of this process is about making sure people have the opportunity to share their views.
