Social Connection

Sometimes we underestimate how important social connections are. While everyone’s social needs are different, many people would love more social interaction than what they are getting. Reasons for a lack of interaction could be that they feel socially awkward, fear rejection, are unsure how to meet new people, or feel they don’t have time to meet up with others. The problem is that social isolation and loneliness can harm both physical and mental health.

We know social connections can improve health, strengthen communities, and even save lives. Here are some other opportunities to connect with others:

  • Rural Mums Group - for all mothers to get together at Memorial Hall twice a month.

  • Wellby Talking Cafe - meeting on the second Tuesday of the month at St Peter’s Church, all welcome.

  • Tea & Talk - meets on the last Tuesday of every month at St Peter’s Church, all welcome.

  • Workshops - there are a variety of workshops available throughout the year, from first aid to preserving food to chainsawing for beginners, and anyone is welcome to attend these workshops, although spaces are sometimes limited.

Tapawera also has a variety of clubs, such as Golden Bush Garden Club, Menz Shed, Netball Club, Creative Fibre, VAST, and the Sport & Recreation Society. If you would like to know more about connecting with others in Tapawera, or would just like to reach out, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Below is a short YouTube video that highlights how loneliness and social disconnection can affect people all over the world.
